E-Bike Fitness Isn't a Contradiction: How Assisted Rides Build Real Cycling Endurance

Cycling Weekly profiled one Dorset rider who changed how often he used his bike by making an e-bike part of daily life. His experience is useful as a habit-building example, but it is not a promise that every rider will see the same fitness or health results.
The rider reported increasing from about 150 miles in a year to 800 miles over six months. During that period, he also reported losing 5 kg and seeing his resting heart rate change from 61 to 51 bpm. Those changes happened alongside many lifestyle and training variables, so they should be read as one person’s observation rather than proof that an e-bike caused a specific outcome.
The most transferable lesson was convenience. Keeping the bike ready to use made short errands easier to replace with rides. A 1.5-mile supermarket trip could add useful movement to the week, and roughly a third of the rider’s mileage came from everyday journeys. A rack and pannier made shopping practical, while a shared-use path reduced traffic stress and helped the routine feel repeatable.
Pedal assistance does not make every ride equally demanding. Effort still depends on the assistance level, terrain, pace and the rider. Instead of judging a session only by distance, use a personal measure such as perceived exertion, the talk test or heart-rate zones set for you. The rider in the source used his own Garmin intensity-minute target and recorded a 159 bpm peak on a climb; neither number is a universal target and riders should not copy it without appropriate individual guidance.
A familiar loop can make progression easier to manage. The featured rider often used a seven-mile morning route with a modest climb, sometimes choosing a steeper hill when he wanted more effort. As the short rides accumulated, 30-to-40-mile weekend rides felt less intimidating. That progression came from consistency, not from trying to make every outing hard.
For a recreational rider, a sensible version of the same approach is simple: begin with comfortable utility rides, choose routes that feel safe, and increase frequency or distance gradually. Keep at least some rides easy, adjust assistance so that you remain in control, and stop if pain, dizziness or unusual symptoms appear. Anyone returning after a long break or managing a health condition should follow advice suited to their circumstances.
